  • This course is a study of the process of social change including the characteristics of contemporary change and the consequences of innovation in technology and social strategy. The conception, patterns, motivation, and appreciation of social change, including industrialization, urbanization, and bureaucratization, and their effects on future human life will be studied from a sociological viewpoint.

33725 대중문화와 사회(Popular Culture and Society)
  • 현대사회에서의 대중매체의 영향력은 아무리 강조해도 부족하지 않다. 그리고 우리가 생각하는 상식적인 대중문화라는 개념 역시 이러한 대중매체에 의해 형성되고 또 제공되는 현상들에 국한되어 있다. 이 강의는 첫째 이러한 좁은 의미의 대중문화의 개념이 아닌 좀더 포괄적이고 학문적인 개념을 제공하고 둘째 다양한 이론들과 연구들을 통하여 한국사회의 대중문화를 문화사회학적으로 이해하고 연구할 수 있는 기반을 제공하고 함께 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
  • The course explores the nature of mass society as a sociological concern and examines various concepts and perspectives on culture and mass society. The main objective of the course is to help students understand the culture in general, and the inter-relationship between social change and culture in a modern mass society.   • 한국사회의 불평등을 구성하는 주요 축으로서 성별분업구조 와 성별 계층화 현상을 연구하고, 젠더 불평등 현상의 원인과 현황에 대한 사회학적 설명을 시도한다. 또한 젠더 시각에서 다양한 사회현상을 분석함으로써 성맹(gender-blind)적 시각의 한계를 비판적으로 인식하도록 한다.
  • Sociological explanations on the structure of the division of labor by gender and gender stratification system in the Korean society will be explored. The question, what is the gender-sensitivity, is the major concern of this course, and the students will learn how to analyse and understand social realities from the gender perspective.

  • Social psychology as a social science has developed since the late 19th century. The course will introduce theories and empirical studies in social psychology and emotion and guide students to understand the relationship between society and individuals through the dynamics of interpersonal relationships.

  • This course introduce the methodology and the techniques of social research, and will be extended to course 20347 Social Research Practice. This course will provide the students with how to select the proper research method and perform the adequate research steps for the various sociological subjects.
20339 비교 사회학(Comparative Sociology)
  • 비교사회학은 두 개 이상의 사회 또는 국가에 대한 비교를 통해 사회학적 지식과 이론의 발전을 추구한다. 수업에서는 사회비교를 위한 연구방법을 고찰하고 선정된 주제나 국가를 중심으로 비교분석을 수행한다.
  • The main objectives of comparative sociology are to generalize the principles of social phenomena and to verify sociological theory through a comparative study of different groups in a society, of different societies, and of different cultures. The course will introduce various comparative approaches so as to help students to understand the structural characteristics of each society and to find common and varying elements between different units of a society and between different societies.
20347 사회조사 캡스톤 디자인(Capstone Design of Social Research Practice)
  • 이 과목은 「사회조사방법론」의 심화과목으로, 사회조사를 어떻게 진행하고, 조사를 통해 나온 자료들을 어떻게 관리, 해석하는가를 현장 실습을 통해 다룬다. 직접 사회조사현장 을 경험하고 모아진 자료를 SPSS 통계 패키지를 사용하여 처리 분석하는 체계적인 교육과정을 통하여 여기서 배운 이론과 방법론이 어떻게 실생활을 연구하고 조사하는데 쓰이는가를 알아간다. 조사 분야에 취업을 원하는 학생이나 대학원 진학을 원하는 학생들에게는 필수적인 과목이다.

  • Social Stratification and inequality has been at the center of sociological inquiry and research. After reviewing general theories of social class and some important empirical works, this course takes a broader look at socio- economic inequalities in South Korea, and explores some of the important outcomes of such inequality through class discussions.

  • This course examines various forms of civic participation in construction and development of civil society. Topics include creation and development of citizenship and civic participation in domestic and international settings. The course emphasizes the emerging trend of international solidarity and cooperation through international organizations or transnational social movement in the areas of human right, women, peace, environments, health, welfare, and labor in the age of globalization.

  • 복지국가의 사회정책은 시장의 실패를 예방, 수정하고 균등한 재분배를 수행할 수 있는 모든 정책을 포괄한다. 이 과목은 서구 및 한국 복지국가의 기원과 유형에 관한 이론적 논의를 검토한 후, 다양한 주제별, 분야별 사회정책에 대한 심층적 탐구를 실시한다. 수강생은 사회정책의 발전과정에 대한 역사적 통찰력과 더불어 현실에서 경험하고 있는 사회정책을 형성, 집행, 그리고 평가할 수 있는 능력을 개발하도록 기대된다.
  • Social policy is the study of the welfare state. This course explains the sociological context of welfare provision, and explores its relationship to politics and society. More specifically, this course reviews key theoretical perspectives on welfare state regimes, and several policy issues related to the emergence of new social risks.

  • 학생들은 사회과학 자료분석에 필요한 양적연구방법을 배우고 컴퓨터로 실습한다. 이 과목은 통계적 원리를 강조하는 사회통계와 달리 국제적으로 통용되는 다양한 분석기법을 소개한다. 통계원리의 기초를 소개하므로 기초통계나 사회통계를 미리 수강하지 않아도 되며, 대화, 피드백, 사례 및 독창적 적용을 중시한다.
  • The course provides various quantitative methods for data analysis in social sciences and practice with computers rather than teaches fundamental principles of statistics. Prior course-taking in introductory or social statistics is not requisite, though recommended. The course emphasizes creative application and dialogue.

  • This course is an introduction to the sociological study of crime. It attempts to explain the social factors that influence our definitions of crime, various measures of crime and victimization, and theories addressing the causes, responses, and consequences of crime.

  • The goal of this course is to understand how social change has affected individual life. One of the main subjects of this course is to consider the characteristics of the conflict among generations, which has emerged as a serious social problem in a rapidly changing society. The course will motivate students to try to solve generational conflicts, and to enhance their quality of life in future society, where the range and speed of change is expected to accelerate.
33300 사회주의 체제변동과 북한 (Post-socialist Transition and North Korea)
  • 이 과목은 한국사회의 사회과정에 지대한 영향을 끼치고 있는 분단과 통일의 문제를 심도 있게 파악하기 위한 목적으로 북한의 사회구조와 변동을 동유럽과 아시아에서 진행되어온 탈사회주의 체제변동이라는 국제적 사회변동의 맥락 속에서 비교사회학적으로 다루고 한반도 평화와 통일방안에 대해 고찰한다.
  • The purposes of this course are to develop research methods for the study of North Korean society and to examine some selected features of North Korean society, including politics, economy, education, culture, ideology, and inequality. Possible ways of achieving unification between South and North Koreas are also discussed.

  • This seminar is designed to provide a rigorous exposure to the wide range of theories and research in political sociology.   • This course offers an examination of environmental issues and concerns from a sociological perspective. Topics for review include: social causes and social consequences of environmental problems; interrelationship between social inequality and environmental inequality; social construction and social experience of the environment; and contemporary developments in the social theory of the environment. Debates surrounding such concepts as sustainable development, deep ecology, environmental justice and global change will also be emphasized.

  • The purpose of this course is to acquire knowledge on history, culture, and social structure of some selected countries or regions of the world. In addition, this course explores various sociological issues concerning those countries and regions. The main regions investigated include Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Far East.
